So over the last two days, I have been trying to address the anti-capitalism and pro-government rhetoric coming out of Occupy Wall Street by pointing out that organic farms, bike shops, and record labels are corporations too. The issue is that the government has provided shortcuts and safety nets, thereby destroying what was otherwise a free market. The proposals and demands coming out of the movement would be just as detrimental to those do-good-er companies as to those traded on Wall Street.
I tried to convey this message on the OWS LiveStream last night and it was not well received. Granted it was a Q&A with two individuals who seemed not to be the most educated economists, but there was a narrow-minded ignorance of the real issues, a pig-headed-ness. When one of the guys on camera did finally address the government’s role in the problems, he disregarded it while saying, “that is trying to find root cause,” like that is a bad thing. Also, I won’t expand on the fact that many of my questions were censored during a chat that was over-run with moderators.
I think that maybe if my questions referring to organic farms and record labels were addressed, the protesters would say, “we’re not talking about those companies, only the bad ones.” But the problem here is that, in law, you can not single out the evil companies from the good ones. Ethics are not a universally agreed upon standard and so a law can not categorize companies based on how moral they are, like they can do concerning how much profit they make or in which countries they operate.
And so we need to investigate the root cause to discover how these companies are being enabled to do their evil. Most of us know that if you look, you will find the government is the cause. One tweeter said to me, “we need companies to stop bribing our politicians.” To which I replied, “They take the money! we need leaders who won’t take bribes.”
So long as these massive corporations know that bribery and lobbying reaches open ears and out-stretched arms, it will never end
